Men’s Emergency Shelter

St. Vincent de Paul’s Men’s Emergency Shelter opened in 1990 and provided 12 beds to men experiencing a housing crisis. Located behind our Coeur d’Alene thrift store, this homeless facility is one of the only shelters in North Idaho which serves single men.

Shelter guests can stay up to 30 days. While at the shelter guests volunteer time at the thrift store and do needed chores at the shelter. They also have up to 7 days to find employment and are required to save half of their income so they will have money available for their own residence. The Men’s Emergency Shelter is funded in part by United Way of Kootenai County.

Women & Children’s Emergency Shelter

The mission of this 12-bed facility, which opened in 1992, is to offer safe and comfortable shelter for women and children in crisis. In an average month, up to 22 women and children find safe haven at the St. Vincent’s Emergency Women’s Shelter. The children at the shelter remind us that the average age of a homeless person in the United States is nine years old.

During their shelter stay, which can last up to 30 days, guests can access our job-readiness training and placement opportunities, as well as Life Skills classes so they will be able to move beyond homelessness and become self-sufficient. 
 
Both St. Vincent de Paul emergency shelters offer guests two free meals a day and have a maximum stay of 30 days. Both are also drug and alcohol free (as are all St. Vincent facilities) and guests are expected to be substance free on or off the premises. Our goal is that when a guest leaves our shelter they are moving into a stable situation.
