In 2009, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul celebrates an extraordinary milestone: 63 years of serving the poor, the hungry, the elderly and the homeless throughout North Idaho
When they came together for the first time at St. Thomas Catholic Church in the spring of 1946, it is a good bet that the members who founded the St. Thomas Conference had no idea of how the seeds they planted would take root in the mountains of North Idaho. How proud they would be if they could see how their simple idea of taking care of the homeless, elderly, and hungry has grown. How proud they would be to count the meals that have been served, the people who have been helped and the lives that have been changed over the last 60 years. How proud they would be of the thousands of selfless volunteers who have followed in their enormous footsteps.
An anniversary provides a wonderful opportunity to reflect on our many accomplishments over the last six decades. But, no matter how significant, a milestone is still just a milestone. It’s a marker of progress along a much longer path. And we have miles yet to go before our work is finished. As we look at the achievements of close to 60 years of service to our community, we want to thank everyone who has helped the Society reach out to our brothers and sisters in need, with their generous contributions, their selfless volunteer efforts and their heartfelt prayers. We are blessed to be able to share God’s bounty and His love with those who most need our support.
